Rise of the Olympians Vol. 1 by Belle Ward
Goodreads Summary:
There are no minor gods.
Lilah Jones is officially thirteen. Unfortunately, the day comes with a few twists she didn't expect. For example, her hair turned into a living rainbow and she was gifted with a golden necklace that randomly goes from being room temperature to as hot a supernova. On top of that, she has a dream that she remembers line by the line when she wakes up.
Seeking answers, Lilah meets two boys, named Cole and Adrian, who gladly clear things up. Remember the Greek myths you assumed were fiction? The old gods that you assumed were just someone's imagination? You were wrong. They've been with us the whole time, fighting battles we didn't even know existed, and they've returned. The Olympians are reuniting, preparing to fight the most dangerous battle they've ever faced.
The Father of Monsters is rising.
My Review:
Lilah lives a pretty ordinary life. She has a dad and a brother, loves colors, and tolerates going to school. She is newly 13 however while reading this I would have guessed her to be older. Which is fine by me. The day of her 13th birthday is like any other birthday she has had. Her gift from her Father is a gold necklace with a wing pendant. She instantly loves it and doesn't take it off. After having a pretty interesting dream that night, that involves a disembodied voice, her necklace feels warm. The interesting thing about this dream is that she remembers it vividly and she knows what it wants her to do. Will she be able to find the two others the dream speaks of? Will her life ever be the same?
Cole and Adrian are very interesting guys. Definitely not your average teenage guys. When Lilah meets them she knows pretty quickly that they are the two from her dream. Can they answer all her questions? Why do the stores in her Greek Mythology class feel familiar? The biggest question of all is who is The Father of Monsters and what does it have to do with a group of teenagers?
This was a great start to this novella series. It is only about 100 pages and is a fun and fast read. Like I said, it felt like I was reading about someone older then 13. The ending is quite the cliffhanger, so prepare yourself! I am looking forward to the next installment!

ARC Review of Defect by Autumn Kalquist
Goodreads Summary:
A Legacy Code Prequel Novella Series - Coming August 1st, 2014.
Selene Hayes is one of the Protected, the first genetically-modified children to be born with superimmunity. In a time when world hunger has been vanquished, but drug-resistant diseases kill millions, she’s part of a lucky elite.
That is, until the truth comes out. Protecteds are Defective, and the ensuing public scandal endangers them all. Selene’s been forced to live off-grid for eight years, and so far, staying hidden has kept her safe.
But rumors of another failed experiment are spreading, of a fatal mistake that could destroy everything. And what’s been unleashed may be headed straight for Selene’s sanctuary.
My Review:
I am so excited for this novella series! After reading The Legacy Code, I was so curious about what happened to Earth. I have high hopes for this series to enlighten me! Selene and her family live off the grid. Her brother Eli and her Nan are self sufficient and make money by selling their home grown goods. The food now is genetically modified. They venture into town when they need something and that's about it. It is a necessity, since her and Eli are Protecteds. There genes have been modified to be immune to disease but, there is a problem. A Defect with how it was done. Secrets are being whispered. Panic is starting and it is heading straight for Selene and her family. What will they do? What can they do? They are no longer safe.
Again, this is a novella so it is short. I found myself at the end dying for more! Selene and her family are in a bad situation. There is little time to figure out what to do. If they don't have supplies they will never survive. Selene is young, soon to be 18. She has a lot on her plate. A lot of responsibility. Can she make up for a mistake she never meant to happen? Will they survive?
I am desperate to know more! I was drawn into Selene's world and I am curious as to how this is going to play out. What is her part in all this? I am looking forward to the next installment! This novella series is going to be an amazing addition to the Legacy Code series!

Second Chances by H.M. Ward and Stacey Mosteller
Goodreads Summary:
Sex. Betrayal. Forbidden Love. Lawn Boy.
I'm not a catch, I'm not even certain I'm what they'd call 'mentally stable,' not anymore. Too much has happened too fast and it ripped my soul in half. I'm alone, with a plastic stick in my hand that says the one word we'd been so eager to see.
Pregnant.
Lucky in love once is a miracle, but I lost him, and this baby is all I have left. My life turned to ash in a blink and there's nothing I can do about it.
Years pass and I'm still here, but it doesn't feel like it, not until the lawn guy, Daniel Clemment, checks me out. Me. A yoga-panting, pony tailing, frumpy-butt, frizzy mommy who's covered in whatever the baby tossed on me at lunch.
Daniel's dark eyes linger too long, as if he likes what he sees. I'm shocked and flattered, but he's too young. The age gap between us is over a decade, but that doesn't stop him. If I sleep with him everyone will think I've lost my mind. Maybe I have, because everyday that I see Dan's sexy, toned body glistening in the sunlight, I consider feeling him pressed against me, naked. The few times his fingers grazed my skin were heaven, but once the clothes come off--he's a god and I'm... me.
I've been alone for so long. Surely one kiss won't hurt anything, one taste of his mouth should be harmless. Things don't have to go that far, but I'm wrong.
Love only comes around once in a lifetime. Only fools think otherwise, and I'm the biggest fool of them all.
My Review:
We were warned in advance that this one was going to be a tearjerker from the author. Put it this way, I was crying at 2% into this one. It's such a whirl wind of a read! I loved it! Gen had a good life. A home and a man that loved her dearly. Then she lost the love of her life, her husband of 10 years when he was deployed. Anyone who has ever lost anyone or has someone they love would feel for her. Especially when the author does such a good job writing those emotions. It's almost as if I felt her pain through the pages. She also just found out two days ago that she is pregnant with his child. It's a good thing shes got such great friends and a Father who really cares. I think her Mom does care but, she's a little cold towards her. After Cade's death Gen becomes pretty much obsessed with living her life and being the best mom to her child. A little boy, named CJ. Where does she go from here? Will she find love again? Does she even want to?
Gen is living life the best she can. She is the sole caregiver to her son CJ, takes care of the house, and tries to take care of herself. She has a lot on her plate. Then she's got her Mom and friends trying to set her up with guys. She is simply not ready to move on. She is still in love with her husband even though he passed away. She is also pretty self councious about her post-baby body. Thankfully she has Daniel, the lawn boy who Cade hired a couple years before he died. He has been especially helpful recently. Fixing stuff in the house and outside. Soon Gen starts to notice that he is not longer that boy but, a man. The night he helps her with CJ is the night that changes things.
Daniel is now a man that is caring, helpful, handy, and kind to Gen. He isn't judging her like everyone else. They start to spend more time together and their relationship is no longer the way it used to be. The age difference between them is over a decade and Gen worries about that. Daniel doesn't worry about it. He knows how he feels and that's the end of it. What will everyone think? Will they judge her? For me they were so cute together and I don't think age should matter but, to society it does. Will these two be able to look past it or will family and society pressure be to much?
This book has jumped to the top of my list of favorites for H.M. Ward. It was such a great book! The way it was written, the emotions just jumped off the page and I was living it with Gen. It's only a stand alone but, I'd love to get more of these two! Go get this one people!

The Feed by C.M. Stunich
Goodreads Summary:
"The fate of an entire people rests on my shoulders. I am heir to a dying throne, daughter of a dead city. I have made hard choices to get this far … ”
Mermaids have never been scarier …
The Feed is upon me and my destiny is laid out before me like a map. There are no detours, no hidden whirlpools that descend into the unknown. Everything I do must be carefully planned or else my choices could come crashing down around me. To change the hearts of my people, I must find the courage to surpass their expectations, to defy tradition and forge my own destiny.
This is it, my last chance at redemption
The Huntswomen, sirens of the sea, have one real purpose in life: on their sixteenth birthdays, they must travel ashore and find a human male, mate with him, and consume his flesh. Only then can they return to the sea and become the last bastion against the violet ocean, warriors for their weaker brethren, the fishtailed merighean.
Natalie is the heir to the throne of the last merighean city still standing, but there's something about the Feed that doesn't sit right with her. When she meets Seth, the man with the strange tattoos, she knows that she must forge her own destiny, even if it means breaking the rules and risking her mother's wrath. Because sometimes, to choose your own path, you must make hard choices.
My Review:
I love mermaid books! This one sounded different from everything I have read in the past and wow, was I right. Everything you think you know and chuck it because this one is different. Natalie is not your typical mermaid. She is more of a siren. She has two legs and no fin. Although she is beautiful, she is also extremely dangerous. She is a Huntswomen and the Princess of her people. Her purpose is to keep balance between the sea and land. To do this she must kill. On her 16th birthday she travels to land and finds a man to mate with. Great right? Well she then has to eat them to bring his essence back to the sea to maintain balance...O_o This is known as The Feed. Natalie has always known she must do this but, she doesn't want to kill an innocent man. She knows if she doesn't then she will be killed but, she wants to change the way things are done. Will she be able to change the way of life or is she destined to continue down the same road as the many Huntswomen before her?
Natalie struggles with what she should do a lot. She is the Princess and therefore has an obligation to continue the traditions. Her mother, the Queen, is also pretty hardcore. She is cold towards Natalie and has tortured her before. Luckily for Natalie she does have some pretty great support from others. Her sister for one was great. There is definitely more going on with her. With the way she talks and "predicts" things. I am curious to see where her character goes. Yuri is also great. He is Natalie's friend and Mer lover. The Huntswomen are expected to marry a Mer when they return from The Feed and Yuri is perfect. He loves Natalie for her and agrees with how she thinks. Will Natalie return from The Feed a different person?
When Natalie goes sets out for The Feed she decides she isn't going to kill anyone. Which is much harder then she knows. Then she finds Seth. Seth is a good looking human who lives by a lake, which is great for Natalie. Since living on land is difficult when you are built for the sea. They are suppose to spend their time having sex to conceive a child during The Feed. For Natalie she refuses to do this. Despite the pull to do so. It was so great to see how Seth resisted too, considering the Siren's pull. To see how Natalie discovered humans and life on land was wonderful. Everything was new to her, almost like a child discovering a book. Just great. As the deadline gets closer for her to return to the sea, a decision must be made. What will Natalie do? She can't return without a child in her.
This was a great book. So different from others I have read. I loved it! There were a lot of tense moments like when Natalie returns to the sea. Especially when The Hunt is started! I loved it! So many twists and turns. Then ending left me hanging so I am dying for book 2!!

And a fun GIF :)

As #1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong’s new Cainsville series continues, Olivia’s power to read omens leads to the discovery of a gruesome crime with troubling connections to her new hometown.
Omens, the first installment in Kelley Armstrong’s exciting new series, introduced Olivia Taylor-Jones, daughter of notorious serial killers, and Gabriel Walsh, the self-serving, morally ambiguous lawyer who became her unlikely ally. Together, they chased down a devious killer and partially cleared her parents of their horrifying crimes.
Their success, however, is short-lived. While Olivia takes refuge in the old, secluded town of Cainsville, Gabriel’s past mistakes have come to light, creating a rift between the pair just when she needs his help the most.
Olivia finds a dead woman in her car, dressed to look like her, but the body vanishes before anyone else sees it. Olivia’s convinced it’s another omen, a sign of impending danger. But then she learns that a troubled young woman went missing just days ago—the same woman Olivia found dead in her car. Someone has gone to great lengths to kill and leave this young woman as a warning. But why? And what role has her new home played in this disturbing murder?
Olivia’s effort to uncover the truth places her in the crosshairs of old and powerful forces, forces that have their own agenda, and closely guarded secrets they don’t want revealed.
Goodreads Summary:
USA Today bestselling author Sawyer Bennett scores big-time with the first novel in a sexy new series hot enough to melt the ice.
Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the rink. Pushed into the sport by an alcoholic father, Alex isn’t afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn’t so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.
As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people—like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries—and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships . . . or does he? The more she sees behind Alex’s bad-boy façade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.
Goodreads Summary:
He’s utterly alone…
Tortured and existing in a dark spiral of despair, bestselling British author, Gavin Cooke, has come to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to escape the seedy lifestyle he had been living in London and in a desperate attempt to regain his writing focus. He’s twisted, bitter and angry at the world. He’s a loner… needing not a single thing other than his Scotch and a laptop upon which he can bang out his next erotic, dark thriller.
She’s running in place and getting nowhere…
Savannah Shepherd’s life is falling apart. Her dream of being a wildlife photographer seems a distant memory and she’s barely able to make ends meet. Driving herself forward with no clear goals apparent, she’s about ready to pack up her bags and head home with her tail between her legs.
Two unlikely lovers…
He’s raw, forceful and a dirty talker. She’s a flowers and romance type of girl. Yet within each other, they find a mutual craving that can only be satisfied by giving in to their desires for one another.
Lust turns into something more… something they were not looking for but tentatively accept. Will it be enough to push them past the obstacles of Gavin’s bitter past?

So what’s the game now? This, or the life I used to know?

In the game, she and a team of other teens are sent on missions to eliminate the Drau, terrifying and beautiful alien creatures. There are no practice runs, no training, and no way out. Miki has only the guidance of secretive but maddeningly attractive team leader Jackson Tate, who says the game isn’t really a game, that what Miki and her new teammates do now determines their survival, and the survival of every other person on this planet. Goodreads Summary:
The critically acclaimed, bestselling novel from Gayle Forman, author of Where She Went, Just One Day, and the forthcoming Just One Year.
On a day that started like any other,
Mia had everything: a loving family, a gorgeous, admiring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music and full of choices. In an instant, almost all of that is taken from her. Caught between life and death, between a happy past and an unknowable future, Mia spends one critical day contemplating the only decision she has left. It is the most important decision she'll ever make.
Simultaneously tragic and hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting, and ultimately uplifting story about memory, music, living, dying, loving.
Goodreads summary: (Not my typical read but, I am curious!)
Kidnapped. Taken to a private island.
I never thought this could happen to me. I never imagined one chance meeting on the eve of my eighteenth birthday could change my life so completely.
Now I belong to him. To Julian. To a man who is as ruthless as he is beautiful – a man whose touch makes me burn. A man whose tenderness I find more devastating than his cruelty.
My captor is an enigma. I don’t know who he is or why he took me. There is a darkness inside him – a darkness that scares me even as it draws me in.
My name is Nora Leston, and this is my story.
WARNING: This is NOT a traditional romance. It contains disturbing subject matter, including themes of questionable consent and Stockholm Syndrome, as well as graphic sexual content. This is a work of fiction intended for a mature, 18+ audience only. The author neither endorses nor condones this type of behavior.

To be honest, I was worried about this book. It sounded sad and after The Fault in Our Stars I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it. Then I saw the movie trailer yesterday aaaaaand I really want to read it. I know that's backwards. Seeing the movie trailer and then wanting to read a book but, I will be getting it on my next bookstore trip :)

My Review:
Amberlyn has had a rough few years. After losing her Mom she is broken. When at her Mom’s funeral her uncle gives her a letter…a letter from her Mom. This letter encourages her to take a risk, to do something drastic and fall in love. So she goes to Ireland, where her parents are from. She works at her aunt and uncles pub with her cousin. She is enjoying her time in Ireland and putting her life back together. Everything changes when Declan O’Callaghan walks into her life. Do these two have a chance together?
Declan is known as “The Whiskey Prince” of Ireland. He has a lot of pressure on him. His Dad is pressuring him to get married in the next six months or he will not inherit the business. This is crushing to Declan but, he doesn’t want to just marry someone. He wants to fall in love and marry someone he wants to spend his life with. Seems logical to me but, his Dad is traditional and very specific about this. He doesn’t go out looking for a girl either. In fact he doesn't leave his property very often because people treat him as royalty. Can he find the love of his life?
Amberlyn knows nothing of the Whiskey Prince. She treats him like a normal guy and he loves that. She is fun and normal and everything Declan wants. There are obstacles in the way, one by the name of Casey (a guy). He causes some trouble for these two. The road to their relationship isn’t easy it’s not just love at first site and BAM they are together. I felt like these two could be my friends, like I could hang out with them. To read about their relationship bloom was beautiful. They both need to get over their insecurities to figure out what they want. Can they do that? Can Amberlyn date the Prince?
The ending was a complete surprise. There was a twist that I was completely blinded sided by. This book was amazingly well written. I couldn't put it down. I was sucked into Ireland. I loved the dialect, the characters, and the story. Toni Aleo can add this one to her list of hits! I loved it!

I loved it!

**Warning: This book is a wild,
sexy beast of a read. 18+**
Putting a woman on her knees
before me is what really makes my cock hard. I fuck with dominant force and
absolute control. I demand complete surrender from my conquests.
Savage man, loner,
warrior… I am dangerous at my core. I have lived amidst the untamed wild of the
rainforest, in a society that reveres me and where every woman falls before me
in subjugation.
Now I’ve been discovered. Forced
to return to a world that I have forgotten about and to a culture that is only
vaguely familiar to my senses.
Dr. Moira Reed is an
anthropologist who has been hired to help me transition back into modern
society. It’s her job to smooth away my rough edges… to teach me how to navigate
properly through this new life of mine. She wants to tame me.
She’ll never win.
I am wild, free and raw, and the
only thing I want from the beautiful Moira Reed is to fuck her into submission.
She wants it, I am certain.
I will give it to her soon.
Yes, very soon, I will become the
teacher and she will become my student. And when I am finished showing her body
pleasure like no other, she’ll know what it feels like to be claimed by an
uncivilized man.
