In My Mailbox #38

In my Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kirsti, over at The Story Siren. It's a way for bloggers to share which books they received. I am hoping to do this every week, unless I have a slow week!

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. It is hosted by Tynga's Reviews. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

I went a little crazy with Black Friday and all. It's a safe assumption that Cyber Monday will be equally a success! I'm even trying some Adult books I wouldn't normally read because of the great deals.

Goodreads Summary:
In this sequel to OF POSEIDON, Emma has just learned that her mother is a long-lost Poseidon princess, and now struggles with an identity crisis: As a Half-Breed, she’s a freak in the human world and an abomination in the Syrena realm below. Syrena law states that all Half- Breeds should be put to death.

As if that’s not bad enough, her mother’s reappearance among the Syrena turns the two kingdoms—Poseidon and Triton—against one another. Which leaves Emma with a decision to make: Should she comply with Galen’s request to keep herself safe and just hope for the best? Or should she risk it all and reveal herself—and her Gift—to save a people she’s never known?

Goodreads Summary:
An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling.

Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He's exacting, blunt, inconsiderate--and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.

Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family's massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who'd been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative--completely infuriating--creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he's never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe's so tempting he's willing to bend the rules--or outright smash them--if it means he can have her. All over the office.

As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they're willing to lose in order to win each other.

Goodreads Summary:
Stalking and restraining orders are a thing of Alayna Wither’s past. With her MBA newly in hand, she has her future figured out—move up at the nightclub she works at and stay away from any guy who might trigger her obsessive love disorder. A perfect plan.

But what Alayna didn’t figure on is Hudson Pierce, the new owner of the nightclub. He’s smart, rich, and gorgeous—the kind of guy Alayna knows to stay away from if she wants to keep her past tendencies in check. Except, Hudson’s fixed his sights on her. He wants her in his bed and makes no secret of it.

Avoiding him isn’t an option after he offers a business proposition she can’t turn down and she’s drawn further into his universe, unable to resist his gravitational pull. When she learns Hudson has a dark history of his own, she realizes too late that she’s fallen for the worst man she could possibly get involved with. Or maybe their less than ideal pasts give them an opportunity to heal each other and finally find the love their lives have been missing.

Goodreads Summary:
Alayna Withers has only had one kind of relationship: the kind that makes her obsessive and stalker-crazy. Now that Hudson Pierce has let her into his heart, she’s determined to break down the remaining walls between them so they can build a foundation that’s based on more than just amazing sex. Except Hudson’s not the only one with secrets.

With their pasts pulling them into a web of unfounded mistrust, Alayna turns to the one person who knows Hudson the best—Celia, the woman he almost married. Hoping for insight from someone who understands all sides of the story, Alayna forms a bond with Celia that goes too far—revealing things about Hudson that could end their love for good.

This is the first relationship where Alayna hasn’t spiraled out of control. And she might lose Hudson anyway…

Question of the week
What’s your favorite Thanksgiving Day food? If you’re not American or Canadian, what is your favorite holiday food?
I love mashed potato's. My mom has this ability to make super creamy potato's with no lumps. I can't do it haha. I also really like turkey, unlike my husband. We never make them otherwise.
I am also a little weird because I don't like pie so I always make a cheese cake for Thanksgiving. That's the cheese cake I made today, in my great-great-great grandma's enamel pie tin :)
Happy Thanksgiving :)

Title: Silver Shadows
Author: Richelle Mead
Release Date: July 29, 2014 (OMG! So far away!!)
Series Number: 5

Goodreads Summary:
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

My Thoughts
I just finished The Fiery Heart and it ended on one heck of a cliffhanger. I was like Noooo you can't end it like that and make me wait 8 months for the next one! I wish they came out faster but, what can you do. I have really enjoyed this series and can't wait for the next one!

Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

Goodreads Summary:
Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen—literally, ouch!—both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma's gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom...

Told from both Emma and Galen's points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

My Review:
I finally read it! I have had it so long and I finally got to it. I wish I would have sooner too because I loved it!! I really like mermaid stories. They have always fascinated me. This one turns out to be a little different then your average tale though. Galen is the prince of the Syrena and Ambassador to the Humans. He literally runs into Emma one day. Emma has the same color eyes as him. Which is interesting because they are violet. After that encounter as well as a dangerous with a shark Galen inserts himself into Emma's life. He needs to know if she is like him. She can talk to fish which makes her even more special. Galen has to try to act human and get to know Emma. This ends up being quite the funny event. Will Galen be able to convince Emma of her true self? Is she the one that could save them all?

I really liked Emma. She was a great female character. She went through some intense stuff in the fist part of the book. With Chloe and the shark attack. She is strong and even when Galen seems indifferent towards her she still is willing to work with him. She is not like the Syrena. She is outspoken and does not take orders. It takes her a while to feel comfortable with what she might be. She doesn't just accept it right away. Will Emma be able to cope with these life changing events?

The pull between Emma and Galen is obvious! They kept trying to pull away from each other and it just didn't work. There is something special between them. Unfortunately, there is always politics when your dealing with Royals. They are so cute around each other. They do have a few heated moments too. Even if one is not with Galen. I loved Galen's sister Rayna and her mate Toraf. They made the story even better.

Great characters, secrets, and romance...what else could you ask for?!? I immediately purchased Of Triton after finishing this one and can't wait to start it! It is one of the best mermaid books I have read so far.

The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead

Goodreads Summary:
In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure—and re-education—looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this thrilling fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

My Review:
Sydney has grown a lot since Bloodlines. She is starting to get over her Alchemist lifestyle. She is friends with them now and even a lover with one. She still struggles with things but, is able to logically think things through without jumping to hate. I was so proud of her in this one! She is working hard to create a tattoo that will help keep Alchemists who need "re-education" become immune to the process. Specifically the re-inking. She is so smart it's scary sometimes. I can't imagine someone more dangerous. Someone who is smart, logical, and kind of a witch now. I would want her on my team that's for sure. It's not easy to replicate the tattoo but, Sydney thinks she can. Her and Adrian's relationship heats up a lot too. It is so dangerous for both of them given the taboo of their relationship. They have been through a lot and have gone to great lengths to hide their relationship. Will they be able to continue their relationship? Is it bound to end tragically? They can't hide forever.

We didn't get to see as much from Eddie or Jill int his one but, I was ok with that. I still love them as characters. I did not like Sydney's sister. I find it funny that Sydney was the brainwashed one. I was like umm Zoe listen to what your saying. I believe you have it backwards. Those Alchemists have it coming! Or at least I hope they do. What a bunch of butts. I wanted to take Zoe by the shoulders and just shake her! I don't know how she could do what she did honestly.

I loved that this one was in both Adrian and Sydney's POV. It was awesome to finally see what was going on inside Adrian's head. He really does care for Sydney and vise versa. They are kind of a perfect combination. Even when Adrian see's Rose, Sydney is all that is on his mind. Things for them were going great. So great in fact that some serious romance happens. I mean seriously hot stuff. They would go to the ends of the Earth for each other.

The end of this one is a big giant CLIFFHANGER! UGH! Now I have to wait until July of 2014 for the next one!! OMG! That is a long time after that kind of ending. Just kills me. I have a feeling it will be worth it I just am not very patient.

ARC Review of A Little Christmas Romance by H.M. Ward

Amazon Summary:
Short Holiday Romance by New York Times Bestselling Author H.M. Ward

There’s no such thing as second chances, and Brooke would know. This Christmas will be spent alone and celebrated, same as the last. It doesn't matter that she’s a disgruntled mall elf, standing next to a chimney-scented Santa with the most annoying co-worker ever. It doesn't make Christmas more magical. It’s just another day to endure, and the holiday can’t pass fast enough. That is, until her old flame, Chris, spots her.

After taking a picture with Brooke in her elf costume, things take an unexpected turn. Maybe getting through the night won’t be so difficult after all.

This short holiday novella is 75 pages in the print edition.

My Review:
Christmas by far is my favorite holiday. I think it just makes everything more magical. For Brooke, she needs it. Not only does she have a crappy job as an elf on Christmas but, she has to hang out with her family that night. Which only reminds her of what she is missing...her mom. What Brooke doesn't expect is someone coming back into her life. Someone she cared for...Chris. He shows up while she's at work and wants to take her to dinner. She settles for him going where ever she wants. After a night with her family she takes him home. Where he has a winter wonderland. Complete with a tree and decorations. They are alone and are plagued with feelings. Feelings that Brook hasn't let go of. Can they have a special night? Will Brooke get her man?

This was such a fun little story. I loved the characters. Chris is pretty much one of the best men ever. He is gorgeous, sweet, and fun. He gives Brooke what she needs on this night. Sexual tension is buzzing between them. They have to talk things out! I was like dude, join her in the shower!! Now, that would have solved problems!

The 12 NA's of Christmas have blown my mind so far. This one was awesome and I will be purchasing the rest! It was a quick read and loved it! Novella's are awesome and so is Christmas love stories! Add this one to your collection!!

Into the Deep by Samantha Young (18+)

Goodreads Summary:
Live young. Live hard. Love deep.

Charley Redford was just an ordinary girl until Jake Caplin moved to her small town in Indiana and convinced her she was extraordinary. Almost from day one Jake pulled Charley into the deep and promised he was right there with her. But when a tragic incident darkened Jake’s life he waded out into the shallows and left Charley behind.

Almost four years later Charley thinks she’s moved on. That is until she takes a study year abroad in Edinburgh and bumps into none other than Jake Caplin at a party with his new girlfriend. The bad-boy-turned-good attempts to convince Charley to forgive him, and as her best friend starts spending time with Jake’s, Charley calls a truce, only to find herself tumbling back into a friendship with him.

As they grow closer, the spark between them flares and begins playing havoc with their lives and relationships. When jealousy and longing rear their destructive heads, Charley and Jake struggle to come to grips with what they mean to one another.

And even if they work it out, there is no guarantee Charley will ever trust Jake to lead her back into the deep…

My Review:
Charley is your average girl who gets the opportunity to study abroad in Edinburgh. She is having a blast with her friends when she is out at a party with her roomy and a couple guys. When she sees a blast from her past. It't like someone threw ice cold water in her face and she panics and runs. Jake is her first love. They were together in high school and were deeply in love. He broke her heart and seeing him opened up all her wounds. The look on his face said it all. To make matters worse, he wasn't alone. He was with another woman...his girlfriend. Things for Charley are difficult after that. She knows he is there going to college in the same city and she knows that he knows she was always going to do this. Is he there purposefully to find her? Then why did he have a girl with him? Can Charley handle him being around? Will she be miserable or will she find a distraction?

Charley and Jake's relationship when they were young was the kind we all wish we had. Then the unthinkable happens and everything changes. Jake leaves her and she is never the same person. Just a shell of the person she used to be. Her family especially knows how awful it was for her. She has been dealing but, never really got over him. Now that he is back in her life she is even more confused. Especially when he starts inserting himself into her life. He wants to be friends to try to apologize for what happened. Again, this makes things hard for Charley because he is there with her friends hanging out...with is girlfriend Melissa! I felt so bad for Charley to have to see them together all the time. It's like hitting someone who's already down. Beck and Claudia were awesome for Charley. They were great friends. As was Lowe! I love him. I really want him to be happy! Will Charley and Jake find what they once had? Will they be able to overcome their past?

Jake is a pretty ok guy. I was angry with him throughout the book however. I thought what he was doing to Charley was selfish. He was doing it all for himself. Charley's dad's reaction when they all landed for the holiday. I think that is what finally broke Jake and he realized how much he her Charley. They really needed to work their crap out.

I LOVED this book! I couldn't stop reading it. I was so engrossed by Charley and Jake's story. It's not your typical boy meets girl and they are in love and live happily ever after. I can't wait for the next one to come out!!

Goodreads Summary:
Gather ‘round, love, because I want you. I want what you have, I want what you don’t have, I want more of what I already have. I want. But if you so much as ask for something in return, go ahead and walk away. Know if you want to play in my world, it’s every man for themselves and the weak become mine. Leeches will be obliterated because I make it my job to destroy them. I protect what’s mine and I take what’s yours…because that’s what I do. I want.

My story will not endear me to you and, frankly, I could care less if it does because I’m in this for the money and nothing else. There’s nothing redeeming about me. I’m a corrupt, money hungry, immoral asshole from Los Angeles. I’m every man’s worst nightmare and every girl’s fantasy.

I’m Spencer Blackwell…And this is the story about how I went from the world’s most coveted guy to the guy no one wanted around and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Amazon Summary:
The bestselling Peachville High Demons series continues with this special novella told from Jackson’s point-of-view! It will be told in 2 parts of 20,000 words each (approx. 60 pages).

“In order to move toward my future, I knew I would have to face my past. If Harper was to ever really understand me, she would have to also understand my greatest triumphs and my darkest secrets.”

Jackson’s past is complicated, but he needs for Harper to understand what he's been through before the war with the remaining priestesses of the Order begins. Part flashback, part present day, A Demon’s Wrath will take you on a journey through both Peachville and The Shadow World where you will learn more about Jackson’s life just before and after his brother Aerden was taken by the Order of Shadows.

Book Description

She’s a loner, she likes to fight and, oh yeah...she has the ability to see the demons that lay beneath the faces of ordinary humans. It’s a gift Charlie Wright inherited the night her parents were brutally murdered when she was fourteen years old.

Now in her last year of high school, Charlie just can’t seem to keep herself out of trouble.  Rather than taking a one-way trip to juvenile detention, Charlie chooses to join a mysterious group called The ForeverLand Alliance.

And then her life really gets weird.

Charlie finds herself magically transported to an alternate universe. In Semper Terra, no one ages, people fly, and one stunningly gorgeous, immortal man manages to capture Charlie’s heart and awaken the adult woman she is becoming.

But it’s not all fun and games. For Charlie is training to become an Annihilator, a select group of Semper Terrans who protect mankind from all of those things that go “bump in the night”.

It’s only when Charlie finds herself stuck in the middle of a prophecy that could bring about the end of the world that she truly begins to understand the deep sacrifices she will have to make.

My Review:
Charlie has never really felt like she fit in. She is different then everyone else. She is a trouble maker and gets into quite a few fights. She also has this little problem where she kind of sees monsters faces on real people! Yea, that one will throw you for a loop. After a fight at school she is approached by someone who offers her a different life. In a whirlwind Charlie is learning about alternate universes and hidden powers. Her life is never going to be the same. Semper Terra, could be her new home. She can learn how to use her gifts and of course there's the super hot instructor, Caiden. Charlie soon learns that this new life isn't just fun and games and flying everywhere. Becoming an annihilator means life or death. Will Charlie accept her new life? Will she be able to deal with her growing feelings for Caiden?

Even finding a world where you feel like you fit in things aren't always as they appear. There are people behind the scenes trying to get you down. Charlie is a pretty fast learner and is coming along very well. She never really had friends before and here she does. Justas is hilarious and I loved him! I felt like there were the group of mean girls too. Always getting in the way and making you feel bad. Charlie works through everything and overcomes a lot in her life.

Caiden is your bad boy teacher who is off limits right? Or is he? He enjoys killing the bad guys and hanging out on the beach of Semper Terra. He does extra training with Charlie to get her ready for the real life fighting in the moral world. He cares for her. I feel like they kind of rushed into things and moved kind of fast but, it worked for them. Especially given Charlie's tragic past. She can finally trust someone again.

This one ends after one heck of a fight. The cliffhanger will leaving anxiously waiting for the sequel!

Question of the week
Are there any book to movie adaptations where you think the movie is better than the book?
This is an interesting question. I can honestly say that I have never seen a movie based on a book where I thought it was better then the book. I haven't read a lot of old books or seen the movies so those may be. I thought The Hunger Games and Harry Potter did a great job but, the books were still better. What do you guys think?
