Frostblood by Elly Blake

Goodreads Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.

Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating - yet irresistible - Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her - and from the icy young man she has come to love.

My Review:
Ruby has had to spend her life living in isolation and keeping her gift a secret. This all comes to an abrupt halt the day the frost guards come for her. She has been so careful with her gift, how could they know she is a Fireblood? Her mother is killed during the attempt to take Ruby. Which causes her powers to surge out of control for a brief moment. She is taken to prison where she starts to lose all hope. however she is rescued by a very surprising pair. A couple of Frostbloods break her out. However it is not simply a break out, they require her services. Will Ruby join the rebels hunt to take down the Frost King?

There is a lot that happens in this book. Ruby doesn't have a lot of time to learn about her powers and be able to control them. When she does get to the Frost King, things take a turn for the worst. She is forced to fight in a gladiator type scenario. Is she ready? Can she defeat the King's best fighters or is she destined to die in a pit?

Ruby's story starts out rather traumatic. She has no solace when taken to the rebels base. The Frostbloods there do not like her or are afraid of her. Her mentor does try to make things eaiser for her. Her relationship with Arcus starts out a bit rocky. He has his reasons for being untrustworthy towards Firebloods. He has been assigned to train Ruby to control her powers. Which is no easy task considering she has had no formal training. I love how its fire vs. ice. Arcus is a true Frostblood. He is cold and very much turned off emotionally. We do find out why later but, he is a very interesting guy. They do form a bond and I hope it blossoms into more!

This was a fun quick read. I am excited to see where this story goes. I can't wait to start the next book, which I already purchased!
